Hurricane Relief Fund

The devastation caused by Hurricane Irma and the continued efforts of relief following Hurricane Harvey, and the possibility of the US being hit yet again with Hurricane Jose, are unprecedented. With this in mind, the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys is expanding its Hurricane Harvey Emergency Relief Fund to include support for everyone affected by Hurricane Irma and victims of all 2017 hurricanes. Our community has responded with great support as soon as the call went out. And we are hoping the community will continue to help. The recovery effort will take days, weeks, months, even years.... Let's show those affected that the Jewish community of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys care and are here to help.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FEDERATION OF SAN GABRIEL AND POMONA VALLEYS

As you and your congregation, along with our entire Jewish community, prepares for the start of the High Holy Days, I would like to add something that I feel is important for all of us to share with our community.

Over the past number of years, I have noticed fewer and fewer people attending Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. In addition, this includes parents and their children. I have heard different excuses from people over the years... "I can't miss work because of an important meeting or project." "My kids cannot miss school because they have a test or would fall behind and it would be difficult for them to catch up."

While I understand attending services is a personal choice, sometime, I think, people have to be reminded about the importance of the High Holy Days and providing them the "nudge" they need.

While I also get why many parents do not push their kids to attend services with them, I think it is crucial that we remind them that no student can be "punished or penalized" for attending religious services. In fact, I think they should be reminded that you (and the Jewish Federation) are able to help them if their school balks at the idea of a child missing school for religious observances.

As you may or may not know, I have written and sent the attached letter to all of our community's school district superintendents, reminding them of when the High Holy Days are and to remind them of the California Education Code that prevents a child for being penalized in order to observe their religious holidays.

I think it would be helpful for parents to see a copy of this letter so they know that we are here to help them and their family.

Let's do what we can this High Holy Days and encourage all of our families to attend services this year by emailing them a reminder. I believe we owe it to our community members. This way, we can look out among the pews and realize we have done what we can to help serve our community and encourage their participation as we enter 5778.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please let me know.
